Monthly Archives: June 2012

As much as we hated to do it, nobody adopted the little stray kitten over the weekend and, since we don’t currently have adequate resources to care for her, we had to turn her over to animal control yesterday.

stray kitten

“I don’t know if I approve of the dog.”

I’m pretty bummed out over it.  But, we were assured they will give her the best chance they can, and they have better access to veterinary care. I will post the link here a little later, just in case someone would like to adopt her from the animal shelter, assuming she’s healthy enough to be adopted. (If you want to look it up yourself, it’s Chesapeake Animal Control.)

Many thanks to everyone who shared the blog post, and to everyone who has tried to help find her a home.

The recent debate over a law requiring equal pay for women has touched a personal sore spot.

I recall years ago, when I began working as an administrative assistant for a large insurance company, I was paid about 10% less than the male I was replacing– and I had more administrative experience than he did!  But, at the time, I was young and naive, and it never occurred to me to ask for higher pay.

I was also charged about 20% more for my health coverage, purely because I am a woman, in spite of the fact that I had (and still have) no intention of having children. I actually argued with the inurance rep over this point.  The health insurance rep (also a woman) explained that it made no difference, because there was a chance that I might change my mind. When I asked hypothetically if they still charge more for women who were menopausal, she answered yes. I told her I hoped that someday she would realize how sexist the practice was. Then I paid the extra 20%, because what else could I do?

Women are not charged 20% less for everything for being women, so why should we be paid on average 20% less?

This should be important to men, too. These women are your wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters. If they are making equal pay, it is a benefit to the men in their lives too.  When women are making the same pay as men, imagine how much easier it will be to save for your children’s educations, pay your mortgages, or take longer vacations.

Moreover, women make up about half the world’s population, so equality for women is equality for every ethnicity and culture.

And, ladies.. it is time to be bold. If you do not ask, you do not receive. Employers trying to save a few bucks will pay any employee a little less if they can. Don’t be afraid to ask for more; you might be surprised how often you get it!!

I briefly considered naming it “Spike” and raising it as a dog, but I really can’t keep this stray kitten we found. I know “cat people” are a passionate and caring bunch, so please share this link and help find it a home!!

adopt a kitten

Adopt me!!

It’s cute, it’s small, it’s affectionate.. and it’s free to a good home.  For more info, please see yesterday’s blog post.

If you’re in the Hampton Roads area and would like to adopt this kitten, you can send an email to service@soulbearing.com

This adorable kitten is believed to have strayed from a feral litter. It (we have no idea if it is a he or a she) was found hiding in a thicket of trees and brush; it was very thin and very frightened.

stray kitten needs a home

Adopt me!!

After a little time and a bowl of milk, it has quickly warmed to people.  And, it seems to be healthy, aside from being a little undernourished.

But it still needs a permanent home. We can keep it through the weekend, but on Monday, it will have to go to an animal shelter if we cannot find another home for it.

It’s very small, and we’re guessing *about* a month old… and did I mention adorable?

It is temporarily being housed in Chesapeake, and is free to a good home.

PS:  As “dog people”, we don’t have a lot of experience caring for kittens.  If anyone has any pointers, that’d be great. Thanks!! 🙂

When I first started using acrylic paints for my art years ago, I bought the standard set of artists’ brushes. They were labeled for use with acrylics or with oils; however, I soon found that the metal ferrules (the part that holds the bristles) quickly rusted, and the wooden handles would swell and split.

The problem was that acrylics are water soluble, and it turns out that so much water is typically bad for metal and wood.  Who knew?

Then one day when I was shopping for new brushes (after having to throw out yet another set of brushes with rusted ferrules and swollen, split wooden handles), I found a set of watercolor brushes.

High quality watercolor brushes are specifically made to hold up through repeated and prolonged exposure to water. The bristles will wear out long before the ferrule rusts, and the sets with plastic handles never split from soaking in the water for too long.

Another tip: If you’re looking for large brushes, skip the art store and go to the building supply store instead. You can find huge brushes of high quality for about half the price!!

Since so many shoppers were so happy about last month’s reduced prices in the soulbearing zazzle store, I’ve decided to keep the lower prices in effect for a little longer. So, the “sale” has been continued until July 20, with much gratitude to all the patrons whose support allows me to do what I do. 🙂

While you’re shopping, don’t forget July 13 is FRIDAY 13TH!! (oooooooo…)  Visit my eBay auctions or soulbearing.com for framed 4 leaf clovers, 4 leaf clover necklaces, and  4 leaf clover keychains, to ward off the bad luck!!

I may not be whole-heartedly a minimalist in lifestyle, but my special fondness of minimalism often shows in my art and photography.  In an increasingly complex world, sometimes it is preferable to get away from the distractions.  Minimalism is the avoidance or elimination of peripheral “noise”, to create a refined work that is lacking not in details, but in distractions.  The result is a moment distilled to its essence.

Be one of the first to have one of these new 4 leaf clover necklaces, made with real 4 leaf clovers– so new they haven’t been added to the main site yet, and are currently only available on eBay.

coming soon: new art!!

The goal is to give customers the best service at the best price.  International shipping has long been a challenge, because to get a lower rate, customers would have to settle for slower delivery– and nobody really wants to settle (myself included).

So, I’m very happy to say there is now a way to save a few dollars on international shipping while still delivering with the same speed, and the savings are being passed along to customers.

Originally, soulbearing.com charged a flat rate of $25 to internationally ship any of the 4-leaf clover gifts offered on the site.  Now, thanks to a new shipping option, there are new lower rates.

To ship any clover items to Canada or Mexico, the new shipping rate is $15, and to ship to any other international destination, the new shipping rate is $20.  These are flat rates, meaning customers can order one item or a dozen items, and the shipping fee remains the same.

And, most of the original paintings and illustrations offered on the site still ship globally for no additional fee beyond the original purchase price.

The shipping calculators on soulbearing.com have not yet been updated, and it may be a few days before the changes are made on the website.  But, the new shipping fees are already in effect, and customers who are overcharged by the current shipping calculator on soulbearing.com will be refunded the difference when the order is shipped.
